How To Use Castor Oil On Hair

If you are considering castor oil to grow hair, it’s important to know how to apply castor oil for hair growth and hair loss prevention. You need to learn to use castor oil the right way to get most out of it.

1. Heat The Oil Mildly: Pour the required quantity in a bowl to heat it mildly. You may add other oils in the bowl, such as olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil for added benefits. This will lighten its density and make it easier to remove later. Now you can either place the bowl on a stove or alternatively, in a hot water pan whilst on a stove. Make sure that oil doesn’t get very hot. Just heat it mildly.

2. Hair Message: In case your hair is totally dry, use water spray to make them a little moist. It is better to divide your hair in different patches. Simply take some oil on your palm and apply oil on the patches one by one. Once one patch is done move to the next, so that oil is applied onto your entre hair thoroughly from roots to tips. Massage hair gently. Castor oil takes some time to get absorbed, so you will need to massage it continuously until a fair portion is absorbed.

3. Scalp Massage: Castor oil hair massage is not enough and you should massage your scalp as well. Take a little castor oil and massage your scalp gently with your finger-tips. You need to massage continuously until a fair portion of the oil is absorbed in the scalp to derive maximum benefits of castor oil use.

Natural Beauty Tip: Do not use too much of oil, as castor oil has thicker density and would be difficult to wash out later.

4. Cover Your Hair: After having done the hair and scalp massage, cover your head and let sit the oil on your hair for at least one hour. Allow the oil to get absorbed into scalp and hair, as much as possible.

Alternatively, you can apply the oil before sleeping and leave it there overnight. To avoid the oil staining your pillow cover and bed linen, cover your head with a towel.

5. Wash Your Hair: Wash your hair with your favorite shampoo thoroughly to get rid of all the oil. As the castor oil is heavy in density, it is difficult to rinse it off the hair completely in one go. To remove it thoroughly, you may need to shampoo your hair twice or thrice.

Your excessive oily hair may be due to oily scalp. As you seem to have tried many remedies and still your hair fall has not stopped, I would suggest that you consult an experienced doctor/dermatologist. He will suggest a treatment considering your actual condition. Certain illnesses or medications may be causing your excessive oily hair and hair loss. Inadequate nutrition, diets lacking in B vitamins, zinc or good fats can also lead to hair loss.

  2. Hi, thanks for the info. I have read elsewhere that castor oil has trouble penetrating the skin and threrefore requires a carrier. (DMSO, ethanol etc) Is this true?

    • Castor oil is completely natural and synthetic-free.The fatty acids in castor oil can penetrate through the skin layers and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.
However, in order to use castor oil to deep clean pores, mix it with a light oil like apricot oil, extra virgin olive oil or jojoba oil and massage it into your facial skin gently and thoroughly.

    • Yes, you can do that. Follow this method:

      (i) Take 1/2 cup castor oil.

(ii) Place some oil in your palm and work it through your hair from the roots to the tips, and massage well. Castor oil has a thicker density, which makes it difficult to wash it out. Hence, make sure that you do not use too much oil.

(iii) Leave the oil in for a minimum of 15-20 minutes. You could also leave it in overnight.

(iv) Owing to its dense consistency, it can be quite a task to wash off castor oil. You will need to shampoo multiple times to get rid of the oil.

      (v) Once you wash your hair, towel dry it and avoid using any heat styling tools.

Apply the oil regularly twice a week for 1-2 months and you will start seeing results. For better results apply this treatment on slightly damp hair.
