What Is Bentonite Clay Powder?

Bentonite is a mineral-rich, absorbent clay. It contains many minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and iron. It has been used from ancient times till now in skin care. As bentonite clay powder is inexpensive and naturally abundant, this article is written to review how we can use it in skin care.

Bentonite Clay For Skin Benefits

It’s known for its detoxifying properties, but it has several benefits for your skin:

(i) Absorbs excess oil: It can absorb excess oils, making it ideal for those with oily and acne-prone skin.

(ii) Exfoliates and Deep Cleanses: This clay can attract, trap and remove toxins from the skin, which makes it an ideal ingredient for deep cleansing DIY facemask. It is also good at firming up the skin.

(iii) Anti-inflammatory properties: It is anti-inflammatory and can help calm inflammatory acne and fight breakouts.

This natural ingredient works on the skin like a sponge and absorbs excess from the skin. That is the reason why it’s a common ingredient in face masks. It is ideal for those whose skin suffers from acne, redness, and/or produce excessive oil.

Note: Because of the above benefits, bentonite clay is used for face masks, which benefits especially those with oily or acne-prone skin.

Caution: This clay is too drying for dry or sensitive skin. So, don’t pair it with other acne-fighting ingredients like acids or retinol.

Side Effects of Bentonite Clay

Like any other ingredient, we must watch out for a reaction. However, external use of bentonite clay is much less likely to cause any safety issues. You may do a small patch test on your inner forearm before applying it all over your face. If any bad reaction or irritation occurs, don’t use it.

Who Should Avoid Clay?

As explained above, bentonite clay is suitable for oilier skin. Since it can be too drying, those with a dryer complexion or who already have issues like flaky skin, eczema, or psoriasis should not use it.
