We recommend coconut oil for your hair, whether it be to deeply moisturize & condition, to stimulate faster growth, detangle, fight dandruff and more. Do you want to know how to put coconut oil in your hair? In this article, I am going to share with you the best ways for putting coconut oil in hair.
Quick Hair Conditioning Technique – When You Don’t Have Much Time
Mixing coconut oil into shampoo can make your hair soft, shiny and glamorous. This trick comes handy when you are short on time but your hair still need some healthy conditioning. Believe me it’s easy and very beneficial for your hair! Simply take a small amount of coconut oil in the palms of your hands along with your favorite shampoo and wash your hair as usual. Coconut oil will work magic to make your shampoo lather up like you’ve never seen it. This is my secret trick to use less shampoo, which is something good for hair!
Now you must be wondering in which ratio to combine coconut oil with shampoo. There is no definite answer here as everyone’s hair is different and there are countless different shampoo brands out there. I would suggest that you start with a one-to-one ratio and adjust from there. I find that for my hair a mix of about 1 part oil to 4 parts shampoo work the best (so, as you can see, I use very little oil in my mix).
Note: Don’t leave the shampoo/coconut oil mix in your hair for too long. Simply follow your regular washing routine just like you would when using a simple shampoo: apply shampoo-oil mix, wait 30-60 seconds, rinse and then apply a conditioner. Use any simple conditioner, there’s no need to pay for fancy and expensive products/formulas.
Leave In Conditioner – When You Have Few minutes
Take a small amount of coconut oil in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together.
Bend over forward so your hair is flowing towards the floor. With the coconut oil on your hands, rub it onto just the ends of your hair.
Style as usual.
(a) Straight after shampoo – when the hair is still damp (but not dripping wet).
(b) After shampooing your hair and it is almost dry.
(c) Even after styling if the hair feels rough.
(*) Though, moisturization is best achieved when the hair is still damp.
(**) It also works great in between washings on dry hair if you don’t wash your hair every day.
(ii) Start with little, about a pea size as excess oil can make your hair look greasy. You can always add more to adjust according to the needs of your hair.
Pre-Wash – When You Have About An Hour
For a pre-wash conditioning treatment, melt about 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil depending on your hair length and strand thickness. Or you can rub a small amount between your palms. Massage it on your scalp and run fingers throughout your hair to evenly coat the oil before you shampoo. Gently massage with the pads of your fingers for about 5 to 10 minutes. Let it sit in your hair for about an hour then shampoo and condition your hair as usual.
Pre-Shampoo oil treatments are a great way to soften and strengthen, even African American hair.
Hot Oil Treatment With Coconut Oil
First warm up 2 to 3 tablespoons of pure organic coconut oil whichever way is easy for you. Next massage the warm oil into your scalp and hair section-by-section, using your fingertips until your tresses are completely saturated from root to tip.
Note: You can apply it to dry hair or freshly washed hair. Since product build-up prevents the coconut oil from effectively absorbing into your scalp, we recommend that you thoroughly wash your hair before you do the treatment.
Wrap your hair in a towel or cover it with a shower cap to keep your hair and scalp warm.
Leave the oil on for 30 to 60 minutes. Any amount of time will benefit, but if you have more time you can leave it on longer.
Shampoo and rinse as normal.
Now you can style your hair as usual.
Hair Deep Conditioning With Coconut Oil
To deep condition your hair, you just need to massage warmed-up coconut oil onto your scalp and throughout your hair.
This time leave it on overnight.
Cover your head with a shower cap, towel or something that is comfortable for you to sleep in.
Shampoo and rinse as normal in morning.
Style as usual.
Tip: You may want to cover your pillow with a towel so that the oil doesn’t get all over the pillow.
Whether you have only a few minutes or enough time to deep condition your hair with coconut oil, try it in the above-mentioned different ways to find out which one works best for your hair. You will be surprised to see how soft, shiny and healthy your hair will turn into!
