Read here everything that you need to know about Facial Sheet Mask and which sheet mask is best for your face – top face sheet masks for 2022.
The sheet mask trend originated in South Korea. They are an indispensable part of skincare routines in Korea and are becoming the most widely adopted skincare regime for both women and men worldwide. Sheet masks, one of the hottest products to rule the skincare products, aim at hydrating, balancing, moisturizing, calming, and brightening the skin.
What Are Sheet Masks?
Just as the name implies, sheet masks are serum-soaked, extremely thin cloth sheets that have holes for your eyes and mouth. The thin cloth is made of fiber, cotton, cellulose, or coconut pulp and the serum, typically, is a nutrition enriched liquid or hydrogel.
Each sheet mask is packaged individually to make them effective and easy to use. When you take out the sheet mask from the packet, it’s wet, cool, and usually dripping. You then place it on your face aligning to the holes over your eyes and mouth.
So, you see, the sheet masks are different from usual masks and peel-off masks.
After laying the mask on your face for, usually, twenty minutes, the mask is discarded – as it’s for one-time use only.
Do Sheet Masks Really Work?
It depends on the kind of ingredients present in the mask, for example, the particle size of the ingredient – whether they can be absorbed in your skin. A wide variety of sheet masks work well for the skin when the correct particle size and the right concentration of the suitable ingredient are used.
Sheet masks can work well because the sheet helps prevent quick evaporation of the serum and allow the serum to seep inside skin cells completely. In addition, the sheet extends the time the ingredients remain on the skin, providing better absorption of the product and hydration. That keeps the skin supple and glowing.
When Should You Use Sheet Mask?
You can use them at night or in the morning before applying makeup. However, for nights I suggest that you use sheet masks that are creamier and richer, in essence, to ensure that all the nutrients really sink in while you are sleeping.
How Long Should A Sheet Mask Be Left On?
Never leave the mask for too long. Never leave a sheet mask on overnight! Remember to sheet mask between 15-25 minutes and never exceed 30 minutes.
Caution: Many people mistake leaving sheet masks on until they dry. Actually, doing so will cause a reversal effect as the sheet will start to reabsorb the moisture from the skin.
How To Use A Sheet Mask?
(i) Don’t apply a sheet mask on dirty skin. Instead, wash your face using a gentle face wash or a facial cleanser with warm water to remove any dirt, makeup, or residue.
(ii) Take out the mask from the package. Unfold the sheet mask and place it on your face by lining up the holes over your eyes and mouth.
(iii) If there is any extra serum left in the packet, pat it all over your neck, arms, elbows, knees, etc.
(iv) Relax and sit back for fifteen to twenty-five minutes, never more than the recommended time mentioned on the packaging.
(v) Remove the mask from your face, toss it in the trash, and enjoy the radiant glow it leaves behind.
(vi) Moisturize afterward to seal in all of the nutrients.
Note: If you use the mask in the daytime, remember to apply SPF afterward.
What Face Mask Is Good For Your Skin?
Read the product label and look for words such as hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and free of parabens & dyes. Using harsh chemicals, allergens, and preservatives on your face can lead to many skin issues.
Sheet masks are pretty versatile and available in many forms. Different ingredients in each mask cater to different skin types and skin care concerns. Here are important tips about finding a suitable sheet mask for you based on your skin type.
Dry Skin: For both dry skin (aka skin that’s lacking oil) and dehydrated skin (aka skin lacking water), look for hyaluronic acid and water-based hydration ingredients —water, aloe, glycerin, chamomile, ceramides, peptides.
Oily Skin: Masks containing charcoal, clay, salicylic acid, or retinol can help reduce pore size and soak up any excess sebum in the skin.
Anti-Aging: Opt for AHAs like glycolic acid or lactic acid for anti-aging benefits. These AHAs will help scrape off the surface layer of dead skin and uncover newer skin with a youthful glow.
Fine Line: Anti-oxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid and resveratrol.
Acne and Blemishes: AHAs (salicylic acid and alpha-hydroxy acids).
Dark Spots & Pigmentation: Soy, tranexamic acid, kojic acid & licorice root extract.
Post-Sun Exposure: Sheet masks containing glycerin and aloe offer good hydration. Popping your mask into the fridge before use for a few minutes can provide an extra boost of cooling.
Rosacea: Niacinamide.
