1. Signs of un-hygiene feet:  Check your feet often. Look for cuts, cracks, redness, blisters, swelling, change of color or any sign of trauma. Use a mirror to look at all areas of bottoms of your feet.

2. Washing: Wash your feet daily with look warm soapy water. Dry your feet thoroughly. Make sure to dry with a towel especially between the toes also. 4. Massage: Give a massage to your feet once in a week.  Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to your massage lotion for a sensational treat to your feet.

5. Keep your feet hydrated: Before you retire for the day, wash your feet and dry them thoroughly. The skin on the soles of your feet does not have any oil glands. So to keep them soft, apply moisturizer or glycerin especially at the heels every night and pull on a pair of cotton socks before you sleep. Make sure to not apply moisturizer between the toes. 6. Toenails: Trim your toenails straight across and then smooth the edges with an emery board or a nail file each week or when needed. Trim your toenails after bath or shower as they are soft at that time and easy to cut.

7. Corns and Calluses: Total Foot care tips require that you take care of dead skin that forms at the pressure points such as heels, toes and bony areas of your feet. They are common, if you wear sandals or flip-flops due to the repeated friction of your feet at certain points when you move around.    Use a pumice stone or a foot file to smooth corns and calluses after bath or shower. Do not use sharp objects to remove them. You can also apply some over-the-counter creams that contain lactic acid to hydrate and exfoliate your dead skin. 8. Selection of foot wear:  A good foot care tip is to make sure that your shoes fit with sufficient room to twist your toes. When you buy shoes, get your feet measured while standing and not sitting and preferably later in the day when the feet are a bit swollen. The size and shape of your feet change with age due to daily pressure and pregnancy. Before you put on shoes, look for any foreign objects inside such as gravel as that can cause irritation or sores. Wear comfortable shoes that have smooth lining and fit well. Wear clean well-fitting cotton socks.

9. Blood circulation: Keeps the blood flowing to your feet.  While sitting at home, put your feet up. Wiggle your toes and twist your feet 3 -4 times in a day. While sitting, don’t cross your legs for longer periods of time, as it limits circulation of blood.

10. Prevent smelly feet: Closed shoes and sweaty feet cause strong foul odor.  If you have smelly feet, wear sandals for air flow, whenever feasible. 11. Prevent cracked and itchy skin: Sometimes you may get peeling, cracked and itchy skin, especially between the toes. This is a fungal infection. If you leave it untreated, it will spread to your nails. Try a good over-the-counter antifungal spray or cream. If the infection persists, consult your doctor, who will prescribe an oral anti-fungal medication.

12. In grown toe nail: This is a condition when the edge of your nail grows into surrounding skin fold. To avoid this, try trimming your toenails straight across, rounded corner on the edge of the nail may grow into the skin. Avoid wearing restrictive footwear. If painful, to treat ingrown toenail soak your affected foot in Epsom salt bath for twenty minutes twice a day. This will reduce inflammation. If the pain does not go away or when there is swelling, see your podiatrist as you may be having infection.

13.  Avoid too hot or too cold: Keep bath water at moderate temperature. As in case of neuropathy patient, they may not be able to feel even if the water is too hot and they may burn their skin. Also never use heating pads. On the other hand do not use too cold water either. Prolonged cold can decrease blood circulation even more.

14. Last but not the least : Although the above foot care tips will take care of your feet, but it is recommended that when you go to your doctor next time, get a check on your bare feet.  Sometimes you may not have any injury or feel a pain, but a doctor can see if there is any indication of your developing a foot problem.  And in case if you notice a cut, blister, sore or bruise that does not begin to heal after one day you must consult a doctor.

15. Natural Beauty Tips for Foot Care

(i) Homemade  Foot Care Soak: Fill a tub with warm water. Squeeze two/three lemons and add the lemon juice into water.  Also add two-three spoons of Cinnamon powder, two table spoon of olive oil and half cup of milk into water and mix well. Soak your feet in the water for ten to fifteen minutes. Now wash your feet with a mild soap, dry out your feet thoroughly and apply a good foot care cream.

(ii) Homemade Foot Care Lotion: Mix one table spoon each of Almond oil, Olive oil, Wheat Germ oil and add 10 drops of Eucalyptus Essential. Shake this mixture well and store it in a cool & dry place. Apply this lotion to your feet (especially heels) after you have washed and dried your feet.

  2. Thanks for the tip to trim toenails straight across to avoid an ingrown toenail. I’ve always thought to cut my toenails like my fingernails rather than going straight across, so I’ll have to change that habit. With how many ingrown toenails I think I might be getting, I think it might be time to look at getting some foot care.
