But, can honey be used for wrinkles?

Continue reading to learn benefits of honey for skin, find out whether honey can help in reducing wrinkles & fine lines and how to use honey for wrinkles.

Is Honey Good For Wrinkles?

Existing Wrinkles: Let me tell you straight away, if you have existing deep wrinkles it’s not going to make any major difference. The regular use of honey can only make a very small improvement in the appearance of existing wrinkles.

However, honey can help in getting rid of fine lines and giving your skin a healthy smooth appearance. But it really works if you use it for preventing formation of wrinkles in the first place.

Benefits Of Honey For Preventing Wrinkles

A major cause for occurrence of wrinkles is mutilation of collagen tissues by free radicals, leading to weakening of the structural support by the collagen to skin.

Free radicals are formed as part of our normal metabolic process, and also due to environmental pollutants – but notably in the skin due to exposure of skin to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

The damage to collagen continues accumulating over years, thereby the collagen strands in the skin get increasingly disorganized as you age and lead to visible signs of aging over time.

The bottom line is: Whereas regular topical application of honey can help in preventing formation of fine lines and new wrinkles, but it doesn’t help in repairing the damaged collagen, so it’s capability to help remove existing wrinkles is not so effective.

Honey Anti Aging Properties

Protection From Antioxidants

Antioxidant is a substance that neutralizes free radicals, so helps prevent oxidative damage to the collagen strands in the skin.

When the free radicals created are more than the antioxidants present in your skin then damage can occur to the collagen strands. If such is a case with you then you need to apply topical antioxidants on to your skin to help reinforce its defense against free radicals and protect it from the risk of damage.

Here honey can help as it contains a number of antioxidants such as polyphenols and flavanoids (Source), which provide some protection to your skin when applied regularly.

Exfoliation

Honey contains some organic acids, which all amount to about 1% of its composition.

The main acid it has is gluconic acid, a kind of alpha hydroxy acid. When honey is used regularly on skin, it provides a gentle exfoliant effect. This helps to get rid of dead skin cells, reducing fine lines and leaving your skin look smooth.

This improvement in the skin’s appearance, to some extent, can also bring about some improvement in the appearance of wrinkles, but it won’t eliminate them all together.

Note: Always remember to apply sunscreen after using any treatment that exfoliates your skin.

Moisturizing

When a moisturizer is applied onto skin, the skin absorbs the moisture. The skin puffs up and wrinkles become less visible. This effect is only temporary. Moisturizing may not remove wrinkles, but it can certainly prevent and improve them.

Honey acts as a humectant, so it binds water and helps in preventing your skin from losing water and thus keep your skin moisturized. This is the reason why using honey for wrinkles can help reduce their appearance, but it won’t eliminate them.

Which Honey To Use?

Always remember to use organic, unfiltered, raw honey on skin. Avoid buying honey that’s heavily processed and filtered. Because such honey loses goodness of the beneficial antioxidants, vitamins, and enzymes, and is left with minimal benefits to your skin.

It’s believed that the darker the honey is, the greater amounts of antioxidants it contains.

Manuka, The Best Honey

Several scientific studies have reported that Manuka honey has the maximum beneficial properties and suggested for its use in treating skin problems like acne and rosacea.
