How many times to exfoliate oily skin in a week? This is a common question asked by the people who have excessive oily skin. Read on for the answer.
People with oily skin often struggle to find out how often they should exfoliate. They just go by common sense without giving much thought and exfoliate too frequently to keep their skin oil free. But over-exfoliation can be just as bad as under exfoliation. This is because of the following two reasons:
(i) Excessive exfoliation, even if you have oily skin, dries out the skin. The skin then thinks that it needs more oil to compensate in order to moisturize and protect itself and so responds by producing more oil.
(ii) Too frequent exfoliation steps up skin-cell turnover much more than a healthy rate. This not only makes your skin feeling tight & sensitive, but also leaves it vulnerable to dehydration and, even infection.
How Often Should I Exfoliate – If I have Oily Skin?
There is no straight answer for this. It really depends on a number of factors such as:
(i) Everyone’s skin is unique. It can be oily, normal-to-oily, or oily and acne-prone.
(ii) Place where you live – whether it’s cold, hot or humid.
(iii) Where you work – whether it’s an oily or greasy area like restaurant kitchen.
(iv) What kind of exfoliator you use.
Whereas there is NO unanimity amongst the dermatologists about how often one should exfoliate, here are the broad guidelines:
(i) The average oily skin kind, which is not sensitive, benefits most from exfoliation two to three times per week.
(ii) A few may need to exfoliate daily. But we warn that they should regularly assess their skin’s condition after every exfoliation. If it appears dry, raw, or inflamed after exfoliation then they need to reduce the frequency of exfoliation, otherwise their skin will begin producing more oil.
(iii) If you use highly concentrated exfoliating creams or abrasive exfoliators, you may not need to exfoliate more than 2-3 times a week.
How Often You Should Exfoliate Oily Skin
For those who have oily skin, exfoliation is a tricky business. Doing it too frequently will dry out the skin to such an extent that it will start producing even more oil to compensate, and doing it less often will leave the skin still looking like an oily slick.
To exfoliate oily skin, we recommend these oily skin exfoliating products.
To benefit your skin most, and do not have a negative reaction, we recommend first exfoliating 2 to 3 times per week. Try more frequently if your skin stays oily after a 3-4 weeks of exfoliation.
