The main purpose of a diy body scrub is removing the outermost layers of dead skin cells. It helps reveal younger skin cells just below the outer skin layer, leaving your skin clearer and softer. The bonus benefits of using an at-home body scrub is that besides smoothing your skin, it provides the invigorating and satisfying feeling of a massage remaining in comforts of your own home.
When you want to give your skin a spa-like treatment at home, start with choosing a body scrub that suits your skin type. You may opt for a salt or sugar scrub. However, coarse salt and sugar scrubs are not recommended for sensitive skin types.
How To Use Body Scrub? – Explained Step-By-Step
(i) Soften the skin in the shower for 5 to 10 minutes, using warm-to-hot water. Alternatively, you may soak your body in a warm bathtub for five to ten minutes. This will soften and prepare your skin for exfoliation. Consider adding few drops of your favorite relaxing essential oil to the bathtub.
(a) If using shower: Pause the running water, and pat dry your body a little bit with a towel before you start exfoliating.
Note: Make sure not to give yourself a body scrub in the running shower. The body scrub will just go waste.
(b) If using bath tub: Allow the tub drain. Using a towel, pat dry your body a little bit. Place the towel on the edge of the bathtub and sit on it.
(iii) Put a small amount of salt scrub or sugar scrub in the palm of your hand, and start rubbing it over the skin in circular motions. You can begin either from the arms down or from the feet up. I personally prefer starting with my lower legs.
(iv) Just maintain a gentle pressure while exfoliating so as not to damage your skin.
(v) For extra exfoliation, you may roll up a moist, soft washcloth and rub it over all over your body, spending about 1 minute in each area. Don’t scrub too hard or too long, particularly when using an abrasive salt scrub!
Tip: Your back is a little difficult to reach. Reach where you can, and request your partner to help where you can’t. A good option is to use body brush having a long handle. This way you can even reach the spots between your shoulders.
(vi) When you’re done, rinse it off with lukewarm water.
How To Exfoliate With DIY Body Scrub – Bonus Tips
(i) Using body scrub once a week is enough to make your skin look glowing and smooth.
(ii) If you feel your skin is getting irritated, reduce the frequency of scrubbing your body or use something gentler than salt such as a sugar scrub.
(iii) Always remember, body scrubs are meant for your body, not for your face!
(iv) If you use a body lotion after exfoliation, pat dry your skin before using it – but make sure to leave your skin slightly wet. This will ensure that the water works as a carrier to draw in and absorb the moisturizer optimally.
